You absolutely can lose weight without exercise – but movement plays a huge role in keeping our bodies and minds healthy, strong, and happy.
Now, I know the word exercise can bring up some not-so-fun images of being hot, sweaty, and sore. But it doesn’t have to be that way. The key is understanding what you want to get out of your activity and choosing forms of movement that feel good for you.
Here are some of the main types of exercise and what they can do for you:
Cardio – This simply means getting your heart to work a little harder. It can be as gentle as a brisk walk or as energetic as a Zumba class. The important part isn’t how high your heart rate gets, but how quickly it returns to normal. Always listen to your body – if you feel dizzy or unwell, slow down or stop.
Strength Training – This helps build and protect muscle. While it often involves weights or resistance machines, it can also include bodyweight exercises, yoga, or Pilates. Strong muscles support your joints and improve everyday function.
HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) – This is a short, powerful workout that alternates bursts of high effort with recovery periods. It can deliver quick results, but it’s not for everyone – especially if you’re new to exercise or carrying extra weight. Always approach HIIT carefully to avoid stressing your joints.
Resistance Training – A gentler way to strengthen muscles using body weight, bands, or light weights. This style is wonderful for toning, building endurance, and supporting bone health, especially for those managing osteoporosis or joint issues.
Flexibility & Balance – Activities like yoga, Pilates, or dance not only keep you supple but also train your brain and body to work together for stability. They’re great for posture, coordination, and preventing injuries.
And here’s one of the best parts: any form of movement helps release endorphins – your body’s natural “feel-good” hormones. Exercise also brings added bonuses when done outdoors or with others: fresh air, vitamin D from the sun, and the joy of connecting with a community. Even a simple 20-minute walk in morning daylight can help reset your body clock and boost your overall wellbeing.
The truth is, every type of activity has its own unique benefits. A mix of different movements – cardio, strength, flexibility – creates the best foundation for all-around fitness and wellness.
And remember – you don’t have to do it alone! We’re lucky to have experts in our Facebook community who can share their specialties and inspire us all to find movement we truly enjoy.
