Do you dream of a fitter body?A healthier, more balanced life?Or perhaps something entirely different that’s been quietly sitting in the back of your mind?
Whatever your dream may be, one thing is certain: dreams only become reality when we take intentional steps towards them.
January is traditionally the season of New Year’s resolutions. Yet year after year, we’re told that resolutions don’t work. So why is that?
To resolve is to make a firm decision.Determination is the strength of purpose behind that decision.
These qualities are important, but life has a habit of testing them. Competing priorities, financial pressures, lack of time, or simply putting everyone else first can all chip away at our best intentions.
Often, success isn’t about wanting something badly enough — it’s about preparing for it.
Accountability, financial readiness, and giving yourself permission to prioritise your own goals all play a part. But there is one factor that can stop progress before it even begins: a lack of planning.
You may have heard the saying that a resolution is a goal without a plan. And a goal without a plan? That’s just a dream.
Recently, a close friend encouraged me to look seriously at my financial future. While confronting at first, it was also empowering. It helped me realise that my long-held dream of retiring by the coast is achievable — but only with preparation. Once I could clearly see where I wanted to be, I could begin making realistic, tangible plans to get there. That shift from dreaming to planning felt incredibly motivating.
Of course, not all dreams are that big. Some are smaller, quieter, but just as meaningful — whether they relate to health, lifestyle, relationships, or simply wanting more balance in life.
So as you reflect on the goals or resolutions you’ve set for 2025, ask yourself:Are they still just dreams, or have you put clear steps in place to support them?
One helpful way to move forward is by using the SMART framework:
Specific
Measurable
Achievable
Realistic
Timely
